Bronchos Upend Woodward to Move to 3-0

Woods Harrell catches a 29 yard touchdown pass against Woodward.

Woodward, OK - Bethany (4A-#6) took the long road trip to Woodward (4A) on Friday night and came away with a victory to move the Bronchos to 3-0 early in the season. The Bronchos controlled the game from the start, taking their opening offensive drive over 80 yards. The drive was capped by a great Jaden Gilliland touchdown run where he broke two tackles on his way to the endzone. The hot start continued as Rylun Sanders intercepted the Boomers on their opening possession, returning the ball to the Boomer two yard line. Jaden Gilliland would once again find his way into the endzone, this time untouched on the Bronchos' first play after the turnover.

The Bronchos never looked back after the hot start and only punted once in the entire first half and that came after a penalty put Bethany in a long yardage situation. As the first half continued the Bronchos continued to play well. The defense controlled Woodward in every way, allowing less than 40 total yards in the entire half. The Bronchos played great team defense on the night with several Bronchos all notching over five tackles each. The Bronchos continued to play both Taylor Heim and Cale Wetwiska at the quarterback position and both played well. Wetwiska, who had been great with his arm through the first two games, had a great touchdown run with his feet on a 38 yard run in the 2nd quarter. Wetwiska was 5-7 through the air on the night for 52 yards and a touchdown pass. Heim was also great at quarterback. He was 6-6 through the air for 62 yards, which included a 29 yard touchdown pass to Woods Harrell in the 2nd quarter. The Bronchos also added another Jaden Gilliland touchdown, his third of the night, on a drive in the 2nd quarter after some excellent punt pressure from Evenson Malaska gave Bethany a short field.

The Bronchos led 35-0 heading into halftime and would add one final touchdown in the third quarter before giving way to some reserve players to get some much needed experience. The third quarter touchdown capped off a scoring drive when Wetwiska connected with Heim for a six yard touchdown on a fade route into the corner of the endzone. The Bronchos led 42-0 heading into the fourth quarter.

The win moves Bethany to 3-0 on the season as they head into their off week. The Bronchos return to the field on Friday, September 23 against the 2nd ranked team in Class 4A, Tuttle in the opening district game of the season.
