Broncho Football Wins Season Opener in Elk City

Elk City, OK - The Broncho football team went on the road last Thursday night and garnered a run-away season opening victory over Elk City, 49-20. The Elks were a playoff team a year ago in class 4A and had high hopes for this season, but those hopes were derailed by Bethany, who was a Class 4A State Semi-Finalist last season. The Bronchos received the opening kickoff and proceeded to go on an 11 play drive that ended with quarterback Sam Brandt completing a touchdown pass to running back Jacob Kyle from eight yards out. After a successful two point conversion attempt to give Bethany and 8-0 lead the Bronchos would never look back.

The Bethany defense was spectacular on the night, only giving up 37 total yards of offense to the Elks when the first team defense exited the game midway through the third quarter with a 42-0 lead already in place. Zach Millspaugh was impressive for Bethany from his middle linebacker position as he had seven tackles, one for a loss, one sack, and one interception. Brodey Claborn also added eight tackles on the night while safeties Lawson Stout and Jackson Howard added six tackles each.

Toward the end of the third quarter the Bronchos would stretch the lead to 49-0 before Elk City got on the board with a couple of scores in the late stages of the game. On the offensive side Sam Brandt was spectacular on the night for Bethany. He was 14 of 22 through the air for 240 yards and two passing touchdowns, the first to Kyle and then a 24 yard completion to Jordan Flinton. Brandt also added 84 yards on nine carries on the night and two touchdowns on the ground. Running back Jacob Kyle scored once through the air and once on the ground and ran for almost five yards a carry in the game. Nate Jones also had an impressive night at the running back position as he rushed for 83 yards and a touchdown in the second half. Tag Harris also completed a 46 yard touchdown pass to receiver Lawson Stout in the middle of the third quarter.

The Bronchos return to action on Friday, September 7 at 7:30 PM in the homecoming game against Chisholm. This game will take place at SNU Stadium.
