Broncho Baseball Off to a 2-0 District Start

Matt Moore (9), Payton Tolle (49) and Dylan Scalice celebrate after scoring in the win vs. the OKC Bronchos

Bethany, OK - The Bethany baseball team is off to a hot start in district play after two wins over Tecumseh on Monday and Tuesday of this first full week of the season.

On Monday Tecumseh traveled to Bethany and the Savages led the game all the way until the bottom of the 7th inning when senior Connor Walstad hit a two out single to get the game winning run to the plate. In that final frame the Bronchos scored three runs to overcome a deficit and win by a final score of 8-7. Bethany had eight runs on nine hits for the day with sophomore Ben Lawson leading the Bronchos by going 3 for 5 from the plate.

The Bronchos returned the trip on Tuesday heading to Tecumseh for the second game of the series. After all the runs scored on Monday this game became a defensive struggle with senior pitcher Chase Wetwiska picking up the win as he pitched a complete game while allowing only two hits and one earned run. Wetwiska and senior Jake Adams were both 1 for 2 on the day and each knocked in a run. The Bronchos had four runs on six hits and won by a final of 4-2. This win moves Bethany to 2-0 early in the district schedule.

Bethany then continued their winning streak on Thursday by beating the OKC Bronchos homeschool team 3-1 in a non-district matchup. Tyler Broyles was the leader from the plate during this game as he went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Connor Walstad got the win as he pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing just one run and four hits. Ben Lawson came in to pitch 1 2/3 innings in relief and didn't give up a hit to record the save. The OKC Bronchos did have the bases loaded in the sixth inning when Lawson entered the game, but he got the batter to ground into a double play to end that critical inning.

Bethany returns to action Friday as they travel to Putnam City West (6A). That game will be played at Dolese Park in Oklahoma City.
